Olympic bronze medalist Tony Jeffries says Floyd Mayweather will take Conor McGregor out within the first four rounds on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

But Jeffries, undefeated in his professional career, is unhappy about his own prediction.

The former boxer, who has met both men and even helped McGregor with his training last summer, says Mayweather will bring a close to the bout with a body shot.

‘I’m not happy about it,’ Jeffries says of his own analysis. The Sunderland native wishes he could say Conor takes this fight but his intimate knowledge of the sport outweighs his personal feelings regarding both men.

‘I actually think Mayweather is going to stop him within four rounds with a body shot,’ Jeffries says. ‘I hope that I am wrong. I hope Conor McGregor knocks Mayweather flat out because I don’t like Mayweather.’

Jeffries, who now owns the Box ‘N Burn gym chain, recalled his first meeting with Mayweather: ‘Just after the Olympics I went to Vegas on a holiday. I knew someone who was in Mayweather’s camp and he invited me to the gym to meet Mayweather.’

‘I was so excited. He was a bronze medalist at the Olympics just like me and I was so excited to meet him. There were loads of people and when he arrived to the gym he went around and shook everyone’s hand. When he came up to me he went, ‘Who the f**k is this white boy?’

Jeffries then says he responded in shock, ‘Oh I am Tony Jeffries.’ While another person told the champ, ‘He’s an Olympian.’ But Jeffries says Mayweather just looked at him ‘like I was a piece of sh**’.

‘So ever since then I’ve wanted Mayweather to get beat,’ Jeffries admitted, ‘But as far as this fight it doesn’t change anything. He is going to stop him with a body shot within the first four or five rounds.’

Jeffries admits, however, ‘I hope I’m wrong’.

But that doesn’t mean McGregor doesn’t have legitimate skill as a boxer. Jeffries had ‘The Notorious’ one in his gym last summer for two training sessions and was impressed by the two division UFC champ’s level of expertise in the ring.

What impressed him most was when McGregor sparred a Box ‘N Burn coach, none other than former IBO and IBF welterweight champion Chris van Heerden.

‘If I never knew it was Conor McGregor,’ Jeffries says of witnessing the sparring match, ‘I would have believed it was a high level professional fighter. He was sparring with Chris van Heerden, who was a former world champion, and it was a very competitive spar. And Chris Van Heerden can really fight and Conor was doing alright, holding his own.’

Tony went on to add: ‘If I never knew he was a mixed martial artist I would have thought he was a high level professional boxer. Because he was that good.’

Jeffries also has experience with training other top tier UFC fighters, including former champion Ronda Rousey and former heavyweight Brendan Schaub.

‘Conor is a better boxer than Ronda Rousey, better than Brendan Schaub, better than Dominic Cruz (former UFC bantamweight champion),’ Jeffries stated. ‘He is a better boxer than any UFC fighter I’ve trained. He looks like a boxer when you see him just boxing.’

McGregor’s level of skill has been under constant scrutiny ever since his bout with Mayweather was announced.

Now a key player in the discussion is McGregor’s leaked sparring footage with former two-weight world champion Paulie Malignaggi, which sees the boxer knocked down after the Irishman lands a series of punches.

Jeffries says that any referee would have called it a knockdown: ‘If that was a fight I guarantee that would have been classed as a knockdown as it happened in a combination. He threw a six punch combination and Malignaggi was on his back, he rolled on his back.’

Knows his stuff: Jeffries also has experience with training other top tier UFC fighters, including former champion Ronda Rousey and former heavyweight Brendan Schaub.

The footage has been a controversial topic, with many arguing over whether it was a push down (as Malignaggi claims) or a knockdown.

Either way, Jeffries believes the sparring footage has only contributed to the excitement over the boxing match which will take place at the T-Mobile Arena this Saturday August 26 in Las Vegas.
