White is continuing “nightmare” negotiations to try to secure a boxing fight between McGregor and former pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather, but a revelation on ESPN on Thursday indicated we might see “The Notorious” in the Octagon soon too.
McGregor hasn’t fought since adding the UFC lightweight belt to his trophy cabinet with a dominant TKO finish of Eddie Alvarez last year. He took time off for the recent birth of his first child — a son he named Conor McGregor — but White indicated there’s a possibility of his biggest star fighting twice in the second half of 2017.
“Conor wants to fight,” White said on SportsCenter. “Conor wants to fight Floyd, Conor wants to fight twice this year, so we’ll just have to see how this thing plays out.”
White recently revealed his plans to hold the McGregor-Mayweather fight on September 16 had been ruined by the announcement of a boxing fight between “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin on the date.
It would seem ambitious to expect McGregor to fight twice after that date but he has fought three times in the UFC in each of the past two calendar years.
STACKED UFC 211 CARD TAKES A HIT
Olympic gold medallist Henry Cejudo has been forced out of his fight with Sergio Pettis at UFC 211 in Dallas on Sunday (AEST).
With the fight card just a few days away, no replacement will be sought for Pettis, who has been pulled from the show without an opponent.
